Hikers in San Luis Obispo County should be sure to stop by the elephant seal viewing area located along Highway 1 just north of San Simeon, CA. It’s a popular destination for tourists and motorists heading through Big Sur from both San Francisco Bay Area north and Los Angeles south.
At low tide, hikers can access the plethora of beaches along Highway 1 just in Cambira and northward – as pictured here at the Hearst San Simeon State Park. Along this coastal trail accessible near the Hearst Pier, hikers get isolated views of jagged coastline.
“Weirdos” is an awesome surf spot known to locals on Moonstone Beach Drive in Cambria, CA. The steeply sloping beach, aptly named for the beautiful moonstones adorning its shores, has peaky and fun surf throughout the year. Santa Rosa Creek and public restrooms are located just south in the parking lot, and hikers can get a day’s worth of sightseeing along Moonstone Beach Boardwalk – a great casual hike.
Sandy gravel along the northern flanks of Cambria and San Simeon can be spellbounding with winter and spring runoff.
